The Core AEO Metrics Framework
AEO metrics operate across three levels: (1) Visibility — are you being seen in AI search? (2) Citation quality — when you are cited, in what context? (3) Business impact — does AI visibility drive measurable business outcomes? Most teams start at level one and never advance to three. All three are necessary for a complete picture of AEO performance.
AI Citation Rate
AI Citation Rate measures the percentage of your target queries for which you are cited in AI search responses. Test methodology: manually query each keyword in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. Record citation (yes/no) and citation position (first source, second source, etc.). Run this test monthly across your top 50–100 keywords. Baseline your initial citation rate; target a 10–20% improvement per quarter. Citation rate by platform often varies significantly — track each separately.
AI Share of Voice
AI Share of Voice (SoV) compares your citation frequency to competitors across the same keyword set. Formula: (Your citations / Total citations in category) × 100. Track SoV monthly per keyword cluster. A rising SoV against a stable overall citation volume indicates you're winning share from competitors. A stable SoV against rising volume indicates the category is growing and you're keeping pace. OptiAISEO automates this calculation across all major AI platforms.
Citation Context Score
Not all citations are equal. Being cited as the primary source of the answer is more valuable than being cited in a list of further reading. Develop a citation context scoring rubric: Primary source (3 points), Supporting source (2 points), Listed reference (1 point). Track your average citation context score per keyword and over time. Improving citation context quality is often a better optimization target than increasing raw citation volume.
Brand Mention Rate (Without Citation)
Track how often your brand is mentioned in AI answers even when not formally cited — named as a tool recommendation, used as a comparison point, or referenced as a category leader. This requires manual testing or AI brand monitoring tools. Brand mentions without clicks still build awareness and drive direct search (users searching your brand name after hearing it in an AI answer). Include this metric in monthly reporting.
AI-Driven Traffic and Conversions
Correlate AI visibility improvements with web traffic and conversion trends. AI-driven traffic is hard to attribute directly (AI users often navigate directly, not via tracked links), but you can use brand search volume trends (rising direct searches suggest increasing AI-driven awareness) and UTM-tagged links in AI-accessible content as proxies. Compare traffic trend lines against the timeline of AEO optimizations to establish correlation if not causation.
